As a Japanese citizen, do I need to get a visa renewal/extension if I have stayed here for 3 months (on Oct 1st) and am applying for a work permit?

Once your visa is expired you must arrange to extend your visa incase you do not want to leave Vietnam and you should arrange to extend your visa one week before its expiration date. You do not need to extend your visa once you have a work permit in hand.
