How to understand the validity, number of entries and duration of stay?

Updated: 06:05 PM - 22 Dec,2024

A visa is a document that allows you to enter and stay in a foreign country for a specific purpose. The validity, number of entries and duration of stay of a visa vary depending on the country you are visiting and the type of visa you are applying for.

Please note these terms when getting a Vietnam visa to travel to Vietnam:

Validity

The validity of a visa refers to the period that the visa holder is allowed to enter Vietnam. Unless otherwise specified, a visa holder may enter Vietnam at any time prior to expiry of validity (right up to midnight Vietnam Time on the final day of validity), so long as the entries granted on the visa have not been used up.

A visa is valid from the entry date specified on your Visa, not the date you enter Vietnam. Regardless of whether you have used your visa or not, the visa will expire after the duration indicated on your Visa.

Once your visa is issued, you cannot enter Vietnam before the entry date specified, or leave the country after the expiration date. You can only enter and leave Vietnam any date, as long as it is in the legal period

Number of Entries

The number of entries on a visa refers to the number of times you can enter Vietnam within the visa’s validity. If your visa has a single entry, you can only enter Vietnam once with the visa. Once you leave, you have to apply new E-Visa to enter Vietnam for the second time. If your visa has multiple entries, you can enter the country multiple times with the visa. You can enter Vietnam as many times as you want, as long as it is still in the legal period that is stated on your current Visa.

Duration of Stay

Duration of stay of a visa refers to the longest period the visa holder is allowed to stay in Vietnam from the day following entry to Vietnam on each visit.

Note:

It is important to check the validity, number of entries, and duration of stay of your visa before you travel to a foreign country.

In case the validity period has expired, you will need to apply for a new visa if you want to enter the country again. After entry into Vietnam, a foreign citizen who needs to stay in Vietnam longer than the duration of stay permitted by the visa must apply for an extension of stay at the Vietnam Immigration Department before the original permitted period of stay expires. This does not necessarily mean your application for an extension will be approved. The applicant shall bear any consequences arising from this situation.

Overstay in Vietnam violates the country’s laws and regulations on control of the entry and exit of foreigners, and could result in a fine or other penalty.
